Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about VTyper.

What is VTyper?

VTyper is a system-level voice input method for Linux. Dictate text into any app — terminal, browser, or editor — using AI speech recognition.

How many languages does VTyper support?

Dictate in 100+ languages, including English, Spanish, French, German, Chinese, and Japanese.

How does VTyper compare to other voice typing tools?

VTyper is built for Linux from the ground up: native IBus integration, system-wide dictation, and zero configuration.

Is my voice data private?

Yes. Voice audio is processed in real time and immediately discarded — we never store your recordings or transcripts.

Which Linux distributions are supported?

All major distributions — Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, Arch, openSUSE, and derivatives. If your system uses IBus, VTyper works.

Do I need an internet connection to use VTyper?

No. Cloud mode offers the highest accuracy, while offline mode keeps everything on your device and works without internet.

How accurate is the speech recognition?

Over 95% accuracy for clear speech, with models that adapt to your voice over time.

Can I use VTyper with any application?

Yes. VTyper works through IBus at the system level, so it types into any app that accepts text.

Does VTyper work with my microphone?

Any microphone your system recognizes — built-in, USB, headset, or Bluetooth. A dedicated USB mic gives the best results.

Can I customize VTyper's behavior?

Yes — hotkeys, languages, auto-punctuation, and a personal dictionary. Premium unlocks advanced options.

How do I activate voice typing?

Press the customizable hotkey (Shift by default), then speak. Text appears wherever your cursor is.

How much does VTyper cost?

VTyper is in private beta. Join the waitlist and we'll send invited users pricing and setup details.

Where can I get help or report issues?

Email hello@vtyper.com with your Linux distribution and a short description of the issue.
